The goal of our Childbirth Education Course is to empower parents through education of the birth process. Everyone has an image of what the Birth experience is like. Whether parents are planning on birthing at home, in a birthing center or in the hospital, it is important they are enabled with the ability to birth. Countless couples approach their birth closed minded and uneducated, relying solely on what the hospital and staff tells them they must do.
This childbirth education course will not tell parents what kind of birth they must choose, but encourage and enable parents to be prepared to birth free of drugs and surgery so that all choices made outside the normal natural birth process will be their choice. Too often parents choose not to educate themselves regarding birth and the details of the birthing process. When parents choose this route they hand over their choice, usually in the belief that birth is an emergency unmanageable by lay people.
This class will relieve the unjustified fear surrounding the birth process by empowering women with knowledge of their own power and choice. Birth is only fearful or scary when parents choose not to be educated regarding their power and choice. Any intervention suggested should be the choice of the mother. If you are not sure what kind of birth you want this course will provide objective information, and research regarding each form. Additionally, many opportunities will be provided to allow you to become comfortable and confident with whatever form of birth you choose. Taking responsibility for one's own birth whether at home, or in the hospital will ensure your birth experience is the way you want and the way you hope.
When there is no other way possible there is no choice. This class is about choice.
First, my students will know that this birth does not belong to the hospital, birthing center, midwife, nurse or doula. This birth belongs to the parents, and sometimes to a single parent.
Second, my students will receive the knowledge and skills to make choices in their birth. Choice is the foundation of empowerment and making decisions develops responsibility. As will soon be evident, no other people are more wholly responsible for the nurture and care of this child than the parents. Additionally they are ultimately responsible for development, birth and delivery. Therefore they should be intimately involved in planning the process of bringing their child into this world.
Third, my students will become confident in making choices as a direct result of their ability to birth this baby in their chosen way. All parents will develop the tools needed to labor independent of drugs and surgery, and will learn when drugs and surgery need be considered. This will differ for each parent, but the tools are the same for all. A mother enabled to birth naturally can always receive drugs and surgery along the way if needed, but a mother planning on drugs and/or surgery forfeits the option of delivering naturally even where the parent is capable of a natural childbirth. Parents will be taught the advantages and disadvantages of each intervention. Parents also will receive training in coping measures and strategies for confronting unexpected changes with confidence free from fear.
This course will empower parents to take control of their birth.
